Dhokebaaz By Kashi Chohan

"Dhokebaaz" (The Deceiver) is a poignant narrative set in the bustling landscape of Karachi, focusing on the lives of Shayan Mirza and Kaveri. The two fall deeply in love while studying history at university, despite coming from different religious backgrounds.

The story reaches a heartbreaking climax when they plan to elope. Kaveri arrives at the meeting point, waiting anxiously for hours. Shayan, however, is already there—hidden from view. As he watches her wait and weep, he undergoes an intense internal struggle. He realizes that by taking her with him, he would strip her of her family, her social standing, and her security.

In an act of extreme self-sacrifice, he chooses not to show himself. He allows Kaveri to return home believing he has betrayed her, confirming her family's prejudices that "Muslim boys are deceivers." The title is a masterclass in irony; while Kaveri lives her life hating him as a "Dhokebaaz," the truth is that Shayan sacrificed his own reputation and happiness to ensure she remained safe within her own world. The story beautifully captures the silent, unseen tragedies that breathe within the crowded streets of Karachi.
